Movies 101: 70-61

#70 - Spider-Man 2
Directed by Sam Raimi
Starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco
Runtime: 128 minutes
Released on June 30, 2004
Plot:
Peter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius, who becomes Doctor Octopus (aka Doc Ock), after an accident causes him to bond psychically with mechanical tentacles that do his bidding.
My thoughts: This movie gives you everything you loved about the original, with better writing and a great villain. With great action sequences and amazing plot twists, Spider-Man 2 is even better than the first.
Robby014's thoughts: I don't know how they do it, but they're able to build character development very well in both movies (There is no Spider-Man 3.). It's good to see that, because you can't just have Kirsten Dunst's boobs bouncing in slow-motion. Well... if it's okay with her...

#69 - The Graduate
Directed by Mike Nichols
Starring Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, and Katharine Ross
Runtime: 105 minutes
Released on December 22, 1967
Plot:
Recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock is trapped into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, who happens to be the wife of his father's business partner and then finds himself falling in love with her teenage daughter.
My thoughts: Before there was Animal House, before there was Risky Business, before there was American Pie.... there was The Graduate. Seriously, though, this movie is heart-warming and has an epic fucking soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. This is one of the best sex comedies I have ever seen. Dustin Hoffman is great in this movie, and Mrs. Robinson shows him a few things in the game of 'Hide the Salami'. Funny and moving. Oh, and it's totally a coincidence that this movie ended up as #69..... (winks)

#68 - The Hurt Locker
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow
Starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty
Runtime: 138 minutes
Released on October 10, 2008
Plot:
Iraq. Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb.
My thoughts: This movie is so fucking intense. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire running time of this movie. Everything could be a bomb and I felt like I was in the situations when I was watching the film. More of a thriller than a war drama. Another decent war film co-starring Brian Geraghty is Sam Mendes' Jarhead.
Robby014's thoughts: I like that there was a little inter-marital rivalry here, between this director and her ex, James Cameron. Both Avatar and The Hurt Locker were great films, but Hurt Locker won best picture. However, I still think Avatar was the better picture. Still, easily worth the price of admission.

#67 - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Directed by George Lucas
Starring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Hayden Christensen
Runtime: 140 minutes
Released on May 19, 2005
Plot:
After three years of fighting in the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker concludes his journey towards the Dark Side of the Force, putting his friendship with Obi Wan Kenobi and his marriage at risk.
My thoughts: This is without a doubt the greatest Star Wars movie. It's emotionally involving, the action sequences and effects are more than impressive, and the soundtrack is epic. I did enjoy Attack of the Clones, New Hope, Return of the Jedi, and Empire Strikes Back, but this is easily the best. I cannot recommend this sci-fi space opera enough.
Robby014's thoughts: I'm not really a Star Wars fan nor a Trekkie, but this was still a good movie. It was pretty quotable too. I liked the fact that Anakin turned to the Dark Side. Just one of the many entertaining features of this movie.

#66 - No Country for Old Men
Directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin
Runtime: 122 minutes
Released on November 21, 2007
Plot:
Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter stumbles upon some dead bodies, a stash of heroin and more than $2 million in cash near the Rio Grande.
My thoughts: Not unlike The Hurt Locker, this movie was intense as fucking hell. Javier Bardem is pretty goddamn scary as the film's villain, and Josh Brolin is quite convincing as the redneck who comes across this whole endeavor. This movie is extremely disturbing and a high tension, unnerving film.
Robby014's thoughts: I wasn't interested in this movie enough to watch it. I've heard from a few people that that was a mistake, however. Good acting apparently, as well. Might be worth a watch.

#65 - The Wedding Singer
Directed by Frank Coraci
Starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, and Christine Taylor
Runtime: 95 minutes
Released on February 13, 1998
Plot:
Robbie, the singer and Julia, the waitress are both engaged to be married but to the wrong people. Fortune intervenes to help them discover each other.
My thoughts: I think the reason I enjoyed this movie so much, was because it had so many 80s references, because of the film's 80s setting. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have great chemistry as romantic interests, and the movie is funny and offensive. One of the best date movies of all time.

#64 - Wanted
Directed by Timur Bekmambetov
Starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, and Angelina Jolie
Runtime: 110 minutes
Released on June 27, 2008
Plot:
A frustrated office worker learns that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father's superhuman killing abilities.
My thoughts: Another out-of-this-world action movie! This movie has balls, man! And is it just me, or is Morgan Freeman great in every single movie he's in? Except March of the Penguins. Fuck that movie! One big problem, however..... we don't get to see Angelina Jolie's tah-tahs!?! SERIOUSLY!

#63 - Back to the Future Part III
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Mary Steenburgen
Runtime: 118 minutes
Released on May 25, 1990
Plot:
Enjoying a peacable existence in 1885, Doctor Emmet Brown is about to be killed by Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. Marty McFly travels back in time to save his friend.
My thoughts: I am in love with the BttF franchise. Even though BttF2 is not on this list, I still enjoyed it, and the first film is easily the greatest 80s movie of all time. This is not just a great sequel, but a fun western, and a perfect book-end to the trilogy.

#62 - Big Daddy
Directed by Dennis Dugan
Starring Adam Sandler, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jon Stewart
Runtime: 93 minutes
Released on June 25, 1999
Plot:
A lazy law school grad adopts a kid to impress his girlfriend, but everything doesn't go as planned and he becomes the unlikely foster father.
My thoughts: I usually prefer comedies with heart, and this one has it in spades. Adam Sandler can be offensive and angry, but he can also be charming and funny. This is one of his best.
Robby014's thoughts: I loved this movie! It was incredibly funny and matched my style of humor perfectly. Good work, yet again, from Adam Sandler. Really quotable movie, too. Go see it!

#61 - The Girl Next Door
Directed by Luke Greenfield
Starring Emile Hirsch, Elisha Cuthbert, and Timothy Olyphant
Runtime: 108 minutes
Released on April 9, 2004
Plot:
A teenager's dreams come true when a former porn star moves in next door and they fall in love.
My thoughts: I've never really seen a movie like this, but if I could compare it to anything, it would be this generation's Graduate. This movie works so well, because A: it's a great sex comedy. B: it has a great cast, and C: it has alot of heart. It's a great comedy, and is completely underrated. Oh, and it has a fantastic soundtrack!
