Movies 101: 90-81

#90 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester
Runtime: 141 minutes
Released on April 6, 1968
Plot:
Mankind finds a mysterious, obviously artificial, artifact buried on the moon and, with the intelligent computer HAL, sets off on a quest.
My thoughts: This movie was WAY ahead of its time. HAL is probably the scariest robot in movie history and that scene towards the end of the film where the lead character goes through that wormhole scared the hell out of me. That scene was the movie equivalent of an acid trip.
Robby014's thoughts: Acid trip, huh? Just like the boat tunnel scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Retro was telling me about this when he first saw it, and it sounds promising.

#89 - Private Parts
Directed by Betty Thomas
Starring Howard Stern, Robin Quivers, and Mary McCormack
Runtime: 109 minutes
Released on March 7, 1997
Plot:
The auto-biographical story of Howard Stern, the radio-rebel who is now also a TV-personality, an author and a movie star.
My thoughts: First off, I'm a big Stern fan. Secondly, I have no bias on this movie, because I saw this film before I was familiar with his radio show. Howard Stern and Robin Quivers can actually act, and this surprises alot of people who watch this movie. Stern is a genius and he shows it in this movie.
Robby014's thoughts: Micro-penis. Hee-hee.

#88 - Transformers
Directed by Michael Bay
Starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel
Runtime: 143 minutes
Released on July 2, 2007
Plot:
An ancient struggle re-erupts on Earth between two extraterrestrial clans, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, with a clue to the ultimate power held by a young teenager.
My thoughts: I know that Michael Bay's rendition of the Transformaverse was a controversial one, but I rather enjoyed this epic interpretation of Hasbro's beloved toyline. The effects were impressive, the acting was decent, and the story was great. Too bad that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a piece of shit.
Robby014's thoughts: I thought this was a substantial film. I don't remember much about it, but I think that has to do with the fact that I saw Revenge of the Fallen six times. I might be the only one in the world to say this, but I can't recall being disappointed with either of the Transformers movies. Also, all I can remember now is Megan Foxyness' boobs in slow-mo. Maybe that's why I wasn't disappointed.

#87 - Predator
Directed by John McTiernan
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, and Elpidia Carrillo
Runtime: 107 minutes
Released on June 12, 1987
Plot:
A team of commandos, on a mission in a Central American jungle, find themselves hunted by an extra-terrestrial warrior.
My thoughts: This movie is so fucking badass. This is one of the greatest action movies to grace the cinema. It has awesome one-liners, great kills, and amazing effects. Arnie is always great, and his performance in this movie is no exception. He truly is the greatest action hero.
Robby014's thoughts: Arnie is the greatest action hero and this movie is great. Quotable in a good way. All of Ahnold's movies are quotable in a good way.

#86 - A Christmas Story
Directed by Bob Clark
Starring Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley
Runtime: 93 minutes
Released on November 18, 1983
Plot:
Ralphie has to convice his parents, teachers, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect gift for the 1940's.
My thoughts: Like all good holiday movies, this one has alot of heart. It's funny, satirical, and relatable, which is why alot of people can connect to this movie.

#85 - WALL-E
Directed by Andrew Stanton
Starring Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, and Jeff Garlin
Runtime: 98 minutes
Released on June 27, 2008
Plot:
In the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.
My thoughts: A great Disney/Pixar feature that doesn't depend on dialogue, but mostly sound effects. The relationship between WALL-E and love interest EVE is touching and charming and the film delivers an important green message without shoving it down your throat.

#84 - Blow
Directed by Ted Demme
Starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Franka Potente
Runtime: 124 minutes
Released on April 6, 2001
Plot:
The story of George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970's.
My thoughts: I found this movie to be similar in style to Goodfellas. Not to mention that Ray Liotta plays Johnny Depp's dad in the movie. Look for Pee-Wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens as Johnny Depp's dealer. A great drug-comedy/drama that has an impactful ending.

#83 - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Directed by Larry Charles
Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Ken Davitian, and Luenell
Runtime: 84 minutes
Released on November 3, 2006
Plot:
Kazakh TV talking head Borat is dispatched to the United States to report on the greatest country in the world. With a documentary crew in tow, Borat becomes more interested in locating and marrying Pamela Anderson.
My thoughts: A great and hilarious mockumentary. This movie was great because it had the perfect balance of in-your-face and subtle humor. Yes, I know, too many people quote this movie. Well, I don't fucking care. People quote The Hangover, Napoleon Dynamite, and The Mask everyday, but that doesn't detract my enjoyment of said films. This movie is VERY NICE! Shit, I'm such a hypocrite.
Robby014's thoughts: I missed the part where this movie was entertaining. It's another quotable movie, but it pissed me off when everyone was trying to do their best "VERY NICE!". Seriously, throwing money at two Jewish cockroaches on the ground? Sexist jokes that weren't jokes? The only redeeming thing in this movie was when Borat was trying to learn the 'not' joke. Which is contradictory, because everything in this movie was a 'not' joke.

#82 - Inside
Directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury
Starring Beatrice Dalle, Alysson Paradis, and Nathalie Roussel
Runtime: 82 minutes
Released on June 13, 2007
Plot:
Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.
My thoughts: What a fucked up movie! Seriously, this is the single goriest movie I have ever seen in my life! This movie is gory, disturbing, saddening, repulsing, and it stays with you long after the credits are over. Brings back memories of David Fincher's Se7en. Foreign horror movies almost always kick ass, such as Audition and Ju-on.
Robby014's thoughts: I was thinking the exact same thing before I saw you say, "What a fucked up movie!". Honestly, this is probably the most vomit-inducing film I have ever seen. It's like the BME Pain Olympics for women...

#81 - Cannibal Holocaust
Directed by Ruggero Deodato
Starring Robert Kerman, Francesca Ciardi, and Perry Pirkanen
Runtime: 95 minutes
Released on June 19, 1985
Plot:
An anthropologist heads a rescue party into the South American jungle to find a missing film team making a documentary on cannibal tribes but can only return with their footage, which reveals their crueler intentions.
My thoughts: Don't disregard this movie as grindhouse torture-porn. It's an important film. Just as important as Schindler's List in my personal opinion. It shows us how more often than not, that people can be as dangerous and unpredictable as any ferocious animal can be. A powerful cinematic experience. Disturbing and impactful.
